When the Reinstatement Notice Arrives

The payment channel depends on your suspension reason and whether you need to complete other requirements first.

Georgia DDS processes reinstatement in stages: eligibility verification, fee payment, and license restoration. Paying the fee before you meet all eligibility conditions does not accelerate restoration and can complicate your case if the payment is applied incorrectly.

Georgia Base Reinstatement Fee

Some suspension types carry additional fees or require proof of insurance filing before DDS processes reinstatement.

What the Reinstatement Fee Covers

It does not reduce fines, cover court costs, or substitute for insurance filing requirements. The fee restores your driving privilege once all other conditions are met.

Georgia operates a multi-tier suspension system. Some suspensions require only the reinstatement fee. The reinstatement notice lists your specific requirements, but it does not always clarify the sequence.

If your suspension involved a no-insurance conviction or an at-fault crash without coverage, Georgia may require an SR-22A filing in addition to the reinstatement fee. The SR-22A is a certificate your insurance carrier files with DDS proving you carry at least the state minimum liability limits: $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage. The carrier files the SR-22A electronically; you cannot file it yourself.

Paying the reinstatement fee before you meet all eligibility conditions does not speed up restoration and may complicate your case if the payment is applied to the wrong suspension record.

How to Pay the Reinstatement Fee

Georgia DDS accepts reinstatement fee payment online, in person at a Customer Service Center, or by mail. The method you choose depends on whether you need to submit additional documentation at the same time.

Log in to the DDS online services portal, navigate to the reinstatement section, and follow the prompts to pay by debit or credit card. The system confirms payment immediately and updates your eligibility status within one business day. Online payment is not available if your suspension requires in-person document verification, such as proof of a completed DUI risk-reduction course or a court order.

In-person payment at a DDS Customer Service Center is required when you must submit documents DDS cannot verify electronically. Bring your reinstatement notice, a government-issued photo ID, and any required documentation listed on the notice. The clerk verifies your documents, processes payment, and issues a receipt. If all conditions are met, DDS restores your license the same day.

What Happens If You Pay Late

Georgia DDS does not extend your eligibility window if you delay payment. If your suspension period ended and you do not pay the reinstatement fee within a reasonable time, DDS may require you to reapply for a license rather than simply reinstating the suspended one. The definition of reasonable time varies by suspension type, but waiting more than 90 days after eligibility often triggers additional review.

Late payment does not add a penalty fee, but it extends the period you cannot legally drive. If you are caught driving on a suspended license while the reinstatement fee is unpaid, Georgia charges driving under suspension as a misdemeanor, which carries a fine, possible jail time, and an additional suspension period.

DDS does not advertise payment plans publicly, but some suspension types qualify for installment arrangements. You must request the plan before your eligibility period expires. Waiting until after the deadline passes eliminates the option.

SR-22A Filing Period Georgia

3 years

Georgia requires SR-22A filing for three years after a second or subsequent no-insurance conviction or an at-fault crash without coverage. The carrier must maintain the filing continuously; a lapse restarts the three-year clock.

When Insurance Filing Blocks Reinstatement

If your suspension involved a no-insurance conviction or an at-fault crash, Georgia DDS will not accept your reinstatement fee until an SR-22A filing is active on your record. The SR-22A is a certificate your insurance carrier files electronically with DDS proving you carry liability coverage at or above Georgia's minimum limits. You cannot pay the reinstatement fee, receive the receipt, and then file the SR-22A later—the filing must be active first.

Not every carrier writes SR-22A policies. If your current carrier does not offer SR-22A filing, you must switch to a carrier that does. Georgia has 8 carriers in the non-standard tier that write SR-22A policies for drivers with suspensions: Acceptance Insurance, Bristol West, Dairyland, Direct Auto, GAINSCO, Infinity, Kemper, and The General. Contact one of these carriers, purchase a policy that meets Georgia's minimum liability limits, and request SR-22A filing. The carrier files the certificate with DDS electronically, usually within one business day.

Pay the Fee After You Confirm Eligibility

Log in to the Georgia DDS online portal or call the DDS Customer Service line to confirm your eligibility status. If any requirement is still pending, resolve it before you submit payment. Paying the fee prematurely does not accelerate restoration and may require you to contact DDS to correct the payment application if your case is flagged for additional review.

Once all conditions are met, pay the fee through the method that matches your documentation needs. If you need only to pay and have no additional documents to submit, use the online portal. If you must submit proof of course completion, a court order, or apply for a Limited Driving Permit, visit a DDS Customer Service Center in person. Keep your payment receipt and confirmation number; you will need them if any issue arises during the restoration process.
